So you want to camp in the famous Litchfield National Park?

Here is what you need to know: 

To camp here you need a booking. There are 3 campgrounds in Central Valley all of which are Category D Campgrounds.  There are 32 sites across the 3 Campgrounds.
These will provide you with an exclusive Litchy Camping experience. These are limited so you will have to book in advance to secure your experience.

Perfect for a secluded glamping experience they offer the following:

  • picnic tables
  • Barbecues
  • No showers available 
  • No water (Please bring your own)
  • Swimming is only permissible in the designated areas

 

You will need to pay Camping Fees to camp here:

  • $20 per adult
  • $10 per child (5 to 17 years)
  • $50 per family (2 adults and 4 children).

 

How to get to this exclusive Camping Experience:

Before you embark on your journey, you will need a high clearance 4WD vehicle to access the campgrounds. You can only camp here in the dry season from May to November. You will need to check the road conditions before you embark on your journey. Located 142 km South West of Darwin you will access them via the park. You can use two roads, either the Cox Peninsula Road and Litchfield National Park roar or the Batchelor Road. When you get to Litchfield National Park, continue on the Litchfield Park Road then turn off onto the Lost City track. The campgrounds are located beside the East Reynolds River in Central Valley.

 

Preparing for your camping trip:

  1. Permits: If you wish to camp overnight outside a designated area, you need a permit.  PS: there are no camping facilities in the bush. 
  2. Collect the access key, 4 working days before your camping trip. You can do this  at  the Parks and Wildlife offices in Millner or Katherine. This is where you can return them too. You will also need identification to collect the key and pay a deposit as well. Besure  bring your credit card to pay the $250 deposit.
  3. Pack rubbish bags to collect your rubbish as they are not provided. 
  4. Advise your emergency contact of your whereabouts.
  5. What to do in an emergency:
  6. Collect fallen timber for firewood from the main Litchfield Park Road.(keep fires in the designated fire pits please be fire safe and protect the park and the animals that live in it)
  7. When washing up with soap or detergent, be  50m away from waterways. This protects the animals in the water from pollution and is a must do.

 

Selecting a camping spot:

All campgrounds are located beside the East Reynolds River in Central Valley.

Each campground has a number of camping sites with the option for towing 4WD camping trailers:

  • Campground 1: 10 unpowered drive-in designated camping sites for high clearance 4WD vehicles. 
  • Campground 2: 12 unpowered drive-in designated camping sites for high clearance 4WD vehicles. 
  • Campground 3: 10 unpowered drive-in designated camping sites for 4WD vehicles. 

 

Insider TIP: Bring Mosquito repellent with a DEET base. The swarms of mosquitoes that emerge and attack at dusk will be pesky if you do not protect yourself.
